Iconic Building for Clacton Town Centre in response to Area Action Plan Preferred Options Document for Consultation January 2010

My concept is to design a whole paradigm for the World.  A Documentary Film
to improve the stability of the Earth’s climate over 1,000 years for World Audiences would attract tourists to Clacton-on-Sea .   It follows that a Science Fiction film should also be made. ...... .

I conceived the Opal Lands Waterway while opal mining in dry outback Australia in the 1970s.   In the 1990s I saw a GE Wind Turbine Exhibition at Wick Lodge, Jaywick, Essex; I started to design wind turbines for urban areas and finished up by applying for a Wind Turbine Housing patent.   Briefly, a building has three arms containing people, products and all other manner of things; the three arms serve as wind deflectors to amplify the wind force at the centre of the building.  One or more Vertical Axis Wind Turbines are used to generate electricity; large doors are closed in very high winds.

The concept is to make the building attractive so that electricity is produced on site to supersede high voltage power lines.    When surplus electricity is produced it is put into the Grid and also used to pump water to top floor tanks for hydro electricity.  As the water is moved about, it operates water features.  The building may be 3 to 10 stories high.

Stabilising the Earth’s Climate with a Wind Management Structure (Pat App)

The Invention and ideas are for the Virgin Earth Challenge http://www.virginearth.com/  that encourages the development of commercially viable new technology, processes and methods to remove anthropogenic greenhouse gases from the atmosphere to improve the stability of the Earth’s climate over 1,000 years.   The prize to be shared is US$25million.  I have entered the competition for Permatricity Limited shareholders.

On July 31st 2007, John Robertson applied for a British Patent; a year later I applied for World protection.New International Patent Application No.PCT/GB2008/050647, Wind Management Structure,)

Coastal Protection

Arising out of the Patent Application I feel its most urgent use is at Happisborough and similar disappearing villages.

Permatri City will be two generations in front of fabulous Surfers Paradise

I like these ideas, but they are not developed to the point where they are ready to be used.  The Wind Management Structure (Pat App.) is different, thousands should be built immediately, a million would halt climate change and global recession.    .

Methane

Methane mined in remote areas from the permafrost will be contained and transported in huge balloons and floated in the Ozone Layer of the Stratosphere (20km – 50km). The balloons will be shaped like regular hot air balloons but instead of a gondola there is a square cabin to carry people, machinery, and freight. The cabins may be fitted side by side to make a platform; hatches and airlocks will enable cabins to be linked. To lift big loads several balloons will be tethered to honeycombed carrying platforms  with strong floors, roofs and panels,
NOTE 1: Where it is better to use pipelines or huge tankers, that should be doneNOTE 2: Hydrogen can be used instead of Methane.

 Stratosphere

Wind storms do not rise above the Troposphere (up to 20km) so the balloons may be safely stored in the Stratosphere.  Helium airships may be used to tow the Methane/Hydrogen Balloons to a linking position in the ozone layer and then to a power station when ordered.  People may travel in the cabins or the balloons may be remote controlled.  Strato-Taxis will take people from one stratosphere location to another.

The words in this column are partly science fiction.

 Permafrost Mining and Storage

The balloons will first of all be tethered at the permafrost mines, landfills, and other places that produce methane.

The balloons will be filled with methane and the cabins loaded for travel.  Each balloon and cabin will display CIGS (PV) to charge batteries/capacitors to drive electric propellers to maneuver the balloons and cabins.  Robotic controls may be used.  For back-up, the cabins will also have a pipe connection to the methane in the balloon and a methane engine that drives a generator. The miner/producer is paid for the methane upon the balloon’s release into the atmosphere.   Navigation lights and radio controls fix the position of the balloons at all times.

Airship pilots will catch the tether ropes and tow the balloons to the nearest linking position; they are paid on delivery.

 Permanent accommodation

Balloon City ’ is put together with the cabins for workers and tourists. Experienced sky divers may launch from cabins.  Power Stations will order balloons full of methane as required.

The Airships may tow the ordered methane and will be paid on delivery.  The Airships will tow the almost empty Methane Balloons from the power stations to the Permafrost mines/factories for refilling and will be paid on delivery.
 Several ‘
Balloon Cities ’ and many ‘ Balloon Towns and Villages’ will be spaced around Earth.    Tourists may join and depart the Airships at power stations, permafrost mines and factories, and at Balloon Cities , Towns and Villages.   School excursions will be encouraged to present an exciting future for all children.

The words in this column are partly science fiction.

The objective is to convert Earth’s coal and oil power stations to methane power stations and to use coal and oil to make plastics for the airships, balloons and other things.   Balloon Cities, Towns and Villages will be exciting places where men, women and children can happily visit and live.

Ozone

Ozone will be used for oxygen for people to breathe and to make water when methane is burned in an engine or used for cooking and general heating.   A

few flowers and vegetables will be grown for pleasure but most needs will come via the Helium Airships.  Human excrement will make more methane and also fertilizer and grey water for the flowers and vegetables.

 Water Supply

Cirrus clouds are almost up to the ozone level and contain ice to be harvested and converted to water, hydrogen and oxygen.  There are no clouds in the stratosphere so there is abundant solar energy to produce electricity for electrolysis - Hydrogen - Oxygen.   (Methane from the earth - Hydrogen from the sky - Oil to make the balloons )

 Avoiding a calamity

The purpose is to make Methane the preferred energy fuel so that the huge amounts stored in oceans and in permafrost is used before global warming releases it in an uncontrolled way to cause a calamity.

Moon mining for future power supplies

The words in this column are partly science fiction.

Helium 3 is the fuel for Nuclear Fusion; it is abundantly stored on the Moon awaiting to be collected and used.   Methane (or hydrogen) powered rockets will be launched from Balloon Cities by sliding down a ramp into the stratosphere to dive down to pick up speed before applying full power to head off to the Moon to collect Helium 3.   The returning rockets will land near the Nuclear Fusion Power Stations on Earth.

Rocketing nuclear waste to the Sun

Nuclear Fusion will be used to generate electricity and to dispose of much present radioactive nuclear waste.  When much experience has been gained from launching moon rockets from the stratosphere, robotic rockets, with the remaining nuclear waste, will be sent to the Sun for final disposal.

That covers the next 1000 years.

Background

This overall Permatricity Invention is a commercially viable design (the “Design”) to achieve the net removal of significant volumes of anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse gases each year for at least 10 years without countervailing harmful effects   The removal achieved by the Design has long term benefits  (measured over say 1,000 years) and contributes materially to the stability of the Earth’s climate.

This Permatricity Invention addresses Methane, CO2 and Water Vapor from the anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse gases.

Methane is potentially the most dangerous gas as a little more global warming may release a huge amount of Methane from the permafrost and oceans.

Methane is 80% Hydrogen and rises to above 20 km where it is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2 and Water Vapor.  A huge release of Methane will speed global warming to melt polar ice faster.

The words in this column are partly science fiction.

The new water will not spread evenly over Earth; centrifugal force, with Earth spinning at 1,000 /MPH, will take the water to the equator and cover Singapore and such places.  The additional mass at the equator, coupled with the reduced masses in the polar regions, will cause Earth to tilt when the Moon and the Sun line up to exert  extra gravitational pull.

Waves that are truly mountainous will kill millions of people.   Ice is already melting and minor equatorial islands are being covered by the sea.

All farm waste and human sewage should be used to make and trap Methane to sell to power stations and so reduce the Methane escaping into the atmosphere.   More coal should remain stored safely in the ground except for steel and plastic making and other specialized uses.  Likewise, oil should remain stored safely in the ground except for plastic making and other specialized uses.

Part of the Permatricity Invention is to have vertical axis wind turbines made for arctic conditions to generate electricity to drill into the permafrost and to apply heat at the bottom of the drill holes to release, capture, and sell the Methane.

The words in this column are partly science fiction

Another part of the Invention is to have Methane gas detectors fitted to all jet planes so the pilots may select the best altitude to fly at to be supercharged by the Methane surrounding them at high altitudes.  The jet engines use Methane from the troposphere and exhaust two greenhouse gases, Water Vapor and CO2.

To store carbon, huge quantities of Eucalyptus trees will be planted in Africa and elsewhere where the residents need firewood.   Eucalyptus trees can be regularly cropped for firewood, the roots and new shoots keep on growing.  To reduce Water Vapor, rainmaking planes seed the clouds over the Eucalyptus trees at every opportunity.  Other types of trees will also be planted.

To make the whole invention commercial, Permatricity Ltd has been formed to supply the retail consumers with ‘Premium Green’ electricity and to produce inspirational action films for profit.

To be ethically ‘Premium Green’ Permatricity Ltd will not buy from any party that uses petrol/gasoline or does anything to cause reduction of rainforests. Wind Management Structures will produce 100% clean electricityPermatricity Ltd will operate as a manufacturer, selling agent, and promoter, always for profit

The main role for Permatricity Ltd is ‘promoter’ and in that role Permatricity Ltd will receive 1% of all debits and 1% of all credits of people and corporations involved in any part of this scheme.

To enhance the ‘Premium Green’ commercial image, Permatricity Ltd will seek to take over decommissioned nuclear power stations and use wind turbines to generate electricity to power  ‘Replicated Primordial Quark Stew’ health and caring resorts.  Nuclear waste will be imbedded in basalt blocks immersed in brine.  Staff will specialise in caring for cancer sufferers.

The words in this column are partly science fiction

The invention is to use lightning and  sea water in a wind, photovoltaic (CIGS), Methane, electric furnace, desalinating combination power station, to sell electricity, fresh water, exotic produce, and health care.

Permatricity Ltd will use conventional Natural Gas (Methane) shipped to wherever it is needed from wherever it is produced.

New Nuclear Power Stations may be used if ‘Replicated Primordial Quark Stew’ health and caring resorts to treat the nuclear waste prove to be successful with the old decommissioned Nuclear Power Stations

Business plan for the patent

From John William Robertson, Director of Permatricity Limited  No 6407444, Incorporated 23 October 2007.   At present I am the sole director.

The Principal Activity will be Developing Real Estate threatened by sea erosion and floods. I I applied for British Patent No. 07 14883.6  on 31 July 2007  and  Rob Knight, patent attorney of Sandersons, Colchester, expects the patent to be granted soon.

The business idea is to buy threatened land at a very low price and then get planning approval for buildings using my invention. The land will then be worth much more and can be sold at that stage or Permatricity Limited would develop the land.

An international patent has also been applied for and when that is granted we will operate internationally.

The business method is for me to have artist's impressions of the proposed development of communities, villages, towns and cities and with those I would call on Property owners and Local Governments where there is threatened land and property.

Cash flow in first year will come from sales of advertising space in -
this website and in the book, May1984 to NOW to qualify for FREE Permatricity Shares and Membership in Permatricity Party.

This business will need to have access to money to buy cheap land or pay for options.  Each piece of land will be treated on its own merits.

Permatricity Limited has big potential with its patent that generates electricity and builds up beaches and flood plains.

With my patent I would immediately start with Tendring, as it is local, and Happisborough, as it is falling into the sea.   To get into giant figures I intend to sell cities; I also have other inventions in my mind.

Every £ spent sponsoring The Permatricity Party, by buying advertising space, entitles the sponsor to 1 free £ share in Permatricity Limited.

When £100,000 Of advertising space has been sold the sponsors will be invited to have a meeting and convert Permatricity Limited into a public company.

North-East of Surfers Paradise, Australia, is Tuvali - a PARADISE LOST: What's left of the Island of Tuvalu

Lost to the sea

Swamped by global warming..Tuvalu is why we must back Earth Hour

Happisborough in England and Tuvali in the Pacific Ocean do NOT have to be lost.  The image below shows a rock sea defense at Clacton-on-Sea.  The sand built up naturally to cover the mud.

The Tuvali and Happisborough coasts can both be built up naturally by working with nature

.....  I live where the sand meets the road; a week ago the Tendring Council sent men to our road to shift sand away!  This sea defense works!
On April 20, 2009 the Council sent a bulldozer and an excavator to clear the sand from the promenade back towards the sea.

The Tuvalu Government and the Happisborough Local Government only need to email me to express interest and I will lodge plans for building approval and start arranging the money.

STRIP OF LAND: Capital Funafuti

THIS picturesque paradise island is drowning, soon to be swallowed up entirely by the hungry, deep blue ocean surrounding it—and SUNK.

Doomed Tuvalu and its 12,600 residents are the FIRST real victims of global warming as sea level rises.

Like the last man standing on the sinking wooden deck of the Titanic, sailor John Iakopo defiantly salutes the distant horizon and jolts his back upright as the warm debris-strewn water of the Pacific sloshes around his knees.

Across his 1920s-style seaman’s hat the word Tuvalu has faded in the relentless sun that scorches the tiny spit of land we stand on.

“Listen to me,” Lakopo tells us. “The good ship Tuvalu is going down. Yes sir. Surer that the sun rising over the sea in the morning.”

This forgotten land and its people are the tragic proof that the world must act now to prevent another breathtaking view like this from vanishing off the face of this earth.

This Saturday you can do your bit by backing our Earth Hour Campaign. Simply switch off your lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm — and remember the coral island of Tuvalu in the Pacific.

The fourth smallest country in the world after Vatican City, Monaco and Nauru, and one of the least populated, Tuvalu sits stranded halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand.

Clacton-on-Sea can lead the world with Iconic Shore Protection.
Global Warming is coming, but most Governments are legislating to halt global warming and much is being done.  Clacton-on-Sea will never be warm most days, like Surfers Paradise.  Give or take a degree celsius and what we already have is what we will get.  Forget about about expanding a "cafe culture" the climate is not warm enough to sustain it throughout the year.

On the few hot days we have in a year, everything is fine as it is.  What can we do on all of the mild and cold days?

We have undercover amusements, cafes and pubs.  To be Iconic we need a heated water fun area to rival the best of Butlins.  Such a place could be in the Pavilion area, Jackson Road, Civic Quarter or Warwick Castle and possibly at the Station Gateway or Waterglade Park.

The Consumer Age is behind us - we have enough retailers in Clacton and should do more to bring the existing retailers more customers.  Old people will continue to come to Clacton and retire; with free bus travel they can comfortably live on the outskirts of town.  Younger people and tourists should have more accommodation close to all the activity.  We are entering the Leisure Age.  We need Bingo for the OAPs to keep their brains active and water activity for the young.

My Wind Barn building generates electricity for sale, so it earns a profit 24/7.   It has 3 arms and a centre for vertical axis wind turbines.   The 3 arms are for waterslides, swimming pools, cafes, accommodation, etc.  The young can live amongst their fun.

The heating for the water would come from the electricity generated by the Wind Barn.  Water is also pumped to the top floors for use as hydro electricity as required.  The warm water pipes will also warm the building.  Good insulation and photovoltaic would also be used.

Tropical plants will be grown in the warmest areas.

The unused ground space would be for parking, markets, cafe culture, etc.

To make Clacton-on-Sea really Iconic several Wind Barns would be built, each would be a different size and have a different theme, all would be called "Clacton Wind Barns", in recognition of them being inspired by the Earls Hall Wind Farm controversy and invented here in Clacton to solve the differences.

Wind Barns can also be small and they should be used to create near pristine beaches in the Pier area with Biorock V shapes at the seaward end of the existing groynes.   Biorock uses very low voltage electricity to grow limestone, coral and mussels to become living  breakwaters.  By continuing to have pollution free seawater at Clacton-on-Sea, tourists and locals would be encouraged to harvest and eat the mussels.

The electricity from the Wind Barns would use LEDs to light the beach for people to walk on at night.  These small Wind Barns could be used for shelters, shops and for beach "cafe Culture".

At present, many people feel the beach and promenade are unsafe after dark; that should be changed.

Whatever is done to the Pier and all other buildings and sites should be in keeping with Clacton's origins and not be anything like Magnet House that does not look right in a seaside town.

To complete the makeover to a tourist resort, the very best areas of sandy beach should be for sand castles all the year round, with dogs being totally prohibited.  Instead of unfriendly "no dogs" signs, have friendly "for sand castles and holes" signs.

North of the Pier we have revetments and then it all degenerates.   We can install iconic ‘Royal’ vertical axis wind turbines to light the foreshore with LEDs and supply the very low voltage electricity to grow shore protection with:

- Biorock®/ Mineral Accretion Technology for Reef Restoration, Mariculture and Shore Protection

Biorock Technology, or mineral accretion technology is a method that applies safe, low voltage electrical currents through seawater, causing dissolved minerals to crystallize on structures, growing into a white limestone similar to that which naturally makes up coral reefs and tropical white sand beaches. This material has a strength similar to concrete. It can be used to make robust artificial reefs on which corals grow at very rapid rates. The change in the environment produced by electrical currents accelerates formation and growth of both chemical limestone rock and the skeletons of corals and other shell-bearing organisms.

The Biorock Process is owned by Biorock, Inc. and is licensed to GCRA for applicable projects.

Biorock methods speed up coral growth in damaged areas and restore authentic coral reef habitat and species. Biorock structures become rapidly colonized by a full range of coral reef organisms, including fish, crabs, clams, octopus, lobster, sea urchins. Species typically found in healthy reef environments are given an electrical advantage over the weedy organisms which often overgrow them in reefs stressed by humans. The advantages corals gain from mineral accretion are cancelled if they no longer receive current, at which point weeds will overgrow the corals. If the current is maintained, coral reefs can often be restored even in areas where water quality would prevent their recovery by any other method.

Biorock structures cement themselves to the hard bottom providing a physical wave barrier which over time, grows larger and stronger.  Biorock materials are to an extent, structurally self healing. If a section is damaged, the cracks will fill making them ideal for breakwater shore protection.

Biorock projects can be powered by a wide range of electrical sources including renewable energy like windmills, photovoltaic solar panels and tidal current generators. This enables their construction in areas where conventional electric power is unavailable.

The mineral accretion process was first developed by architect Wolf Hilbertz in order to provide alternative construction materials. He and Tom Goreau of the Global Coral Reef Alliance later developed its use for reef restoration and shore protection.

Biorock® is a registered trademark of Biorock, Inc. The Biorock Process is owned by Biorock, Inc.

Dear Tom

The Y shape rock breakwaters are excellent here at Clacton.

Question:  I still have a lingering doubt on whether your system will work in the colder seawater of Eastern England (and Scotland.)

There is a lot of erosion north of me, with houses and farms being lost to the sea with few people caring - it is more like a tourist attraction.

And is the colder water OK for your seagrass and intertidal work?

We have big tides ( about 9ft), is that OK?
Cheers
John

02/03/2010 00:49

Dear John,

The warmer and saltier the water the better for Biorock, but in cold waters we grow oyster and mussel reefs. We have done pilot projects in Alaska and in Norway north of the Arctic Circle. Large tides are an engineering issue, but can be dealt with.

Rock and concrete breakwaters are inevitable failures, because they increase scour until the collapse and need to be rebuilt. Ours are based on entirely different physical principles, wave refraction instead of reflection, grow back sand beaches and marine habitat, and cost far less. We can make them in any shape, although we have not yet done the Y shape, however we do do W shapes which is close enough. We also restore seagrasses and intertidal grasses, but have not yet had the time to work on mangroves. We won't have time to do so on this project though.

I'm not sure I get the sandalwood idea. I thought that sandalwood grew on islands with a long dry season, but did not think that they grew in mangroves?

Best wishes,

Tom

TSUNAMI LESSONS NOT LEARNED?

Yesterday’s (February 28 2010) massive Magnitude 8.8 Chile earthquake triggered a tsunami alert across the entire Pacific Ocean. Here on Majuro, near the center of the Pacific, we knew big waves were likely headed our way, but had no way to know if they were the massive killer waves that killed 300,000 people in the eastern Indian Ocean on December 26 2004, or if they would be minor. Here in the Marshall Islands, an atoll nation of around 1200 tiny islands with an average height no more than 2 meters above high tide, there is no high ground to run to, and even a fairly small wave could have swept over every island. That happened in the Maldives in the Indian Ocean tsunami, when the waves passed over every island, washing people out to sea. Most managed to swim back to land, but a hundred people were never found. All the groundwater was contaminated with salt, all the bananas (and mangoes on the only island large enough to grow them) died, and people had to wait a year or so for rainwater to flush the salt out before they could grow any food but coconuts again.

The people of every single low lying island in the Pacific have clear memories of terrible times when waves washed clean over their island, when most of the population was carried away, and only a lucky few survived, many by lashing themselves with coconut fibre ropes to breadfruit trees. In many places they can name the date, sometimes this was only a few years or decades ago and the memories are fresh, in other places they lie way back in the times of their grandparents or grandparents’ grandparents, but they are still remembered in oral tradition even though the actual dates are lost. In some cases they lie so far back in time that they have been mythologized as events that happened to the gods. There is probably NO low island without such a tradition.

In Majuro, capital of the Marshall Islands, we learned early yesterday morning that a tsunami alert had been called for the entire Pacific. The earthquake in Chile was stronger than the one that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami. But there is no strong correlation between earthquake strength and tsunamis, very strong earthquakes may have no tsunamis at all. The key is whether they take place along steeply sloping sediments that can undergo sudden landslides. These conditions are common in both Indonesia and Chile, so all we could do was wait and see what happened to other places nearer to Chile as guide.

Hawaii, 3,000 kilometers away, was due to be hit around 2 hours earlier. US TV stations available on satellite links in the Marshall Islands were fixated on Hawaii, large islands where the risk is small because there is plenty of high ground to run to. They never once mentioned any of the atoll islands or their extreme vulnerability. Whether the entire population of the atoll islands lived or died would be of far less importance to the US news media than a few luxury yachts sunk in a Hawaiian harbor with no loss of life. We could see live footage from Honolulu, and when we finally saw how small the waves were, we knew we had lucked out too. We would not risk being killed two hours later. This was fortunate, because the Marshall Islands sat directly in the middle of the most intense high wave height (dark orange) tongue directly in front of the earthquake, while Hawaii lay to the northeast in a much lower wave height area (yellow). The most vulnerable low islands don’t even appear on NOAA’s tsunami map, only high islands!

We knew with two hours reprieve that we would not die that day and would see the next. Here there was no panic all. Small children played in the streets as usual. There were no lines in the stores. Most people probably never even knew their lives might be snuffed out. They are too poor to have cable TV bringing in foreign news. In Hawaii there were sirens blasting away. Here there was no public warning at all. As it turned out, the day of the tsunami alert we had strong winds and waves. On the eastern ocean side of Majuro, where I am living, directly facing the tsunami, the Trade Wind-driven waves were three to four feet high, and so the tsunami was barely noticeable because the waves. The day that began with drama and fear, among that small minority that happened to see the foreign TV (in my case while getting my morning coffee), passed without event, just another day in paradise.

I was supposed to have been at the time not in Majuro, connected to global news media carrying the warnings, but at an outlying atoll, building wave, tidal current, wind, and solar powered shore protection projects to grow coral reefs and allow beaches to grow back on severely eroding islands that are highly threatened by global sea level rise. These islands had suffered catastrophic flooding by high tides that forced hundreds of people out of their homes and caused a national state of emergency a little more than a year ago. Had we been on an outer atoll we would not have been so lucky, for these islands have NO electricity, mail, telephones, or internet, so there would have been no way to know a tsunami was approaching until after it had already hit!

Living to tell the tale because this alert turned out to be a false alarm was nothing more than sheer luck. Another smaller earthquake in Chile, or Hawaii, or any number of other locations could easily trigger a tsunami that would flow right over these islands and thousands of others. The fact that this tsunami did not materialize despite the alert will inevitably be interpreted by the religious as proof of a miracle by their god resulting from their own personal virtue, just as they viewed the Asian tsunami as divine retribution, that their god was punishing others for being sinful, in particular for worshipping other gods than their own.

The sad fact is that here in the central Pacific no lessons were learned about the extreme vulnerability of these islands and the need to strengthen shore defenses by growing back coral reefs to protect their shores. And unfortunately these lessons will probably not be learned until there is a genuine catastrophe. Which will inevitably happen one day, sooner or later, but cannot be predicted in advance. When that happens we will once again be woefully unprepared, and the focus of global attention will once again be on the richest and least vulnerable inhabitants of high islands, and once again the poorest people on the low islands with no place to flee to, who will be the worst affected, will be forgotten. It’s just a matter of time.

Ending Global Warming

If all new buildings contained vertical axis wind turbines as per my British Patent No. 07 14883.6 and proposed Clacton-on-Sea Iconic Building, we would not need high voltage transmission lines; communities would stand alone – but the changeover will take a century or two, so all we can do is start.

South Australia has the geography, to do much to end global warming.  Australia, with its poor quality soil can store carbon.  ASCAS (below) is worth reading.  First, glance over : Dirt Cheap Dirt: Worms + Cardboard = Soil  By Joe Laur
Follow me on Twitter

“The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out….”Worms are creatures that most people would rather not hang out with. They conjure up imagers of slimy, dirty writhing rubbery little creatures that prepubescent boys torment little girls with. Or unsettling reminders that in the end, we all become “worm food”. But the little wrigglers are one of our best friends when it comes to healthy soils and good food. That’s because those night crawlers are waste to resource Olympic athletes. When Ricky Baruch and Deb Habib first moved on to the 30 acres of abandoned land in Orange, Massachusetts that became Seeds of Solidarity farm in 1995, the soils were not the best. Rocky and sandy, they were best suited to the pines and weeds already growing there.

Low on funds and with a lot of land to restore, Deb and Rick put discarded corrugated cardboard from the town dump on the ground to smother the weeds so they could plant and till. But they discovered something remarkable. When they went to remove the cardboard to plant, they found it had worms and a layer of nutrient rich fresh soil below it, produced by the worm castings (nice way to say worm poop), and the microorganisms that thrived in the dark moist environment beneath the cardboard. They decided to plant their seedlings right through cuts in the cardboard, using it as weed cover and to further enrich the soil. They were able to repeat this process on their poor soils year after year, deepening the nutrient rich layer a little more each year. Soon waste cardboard and worms became a keystone of their land reclamation and farming method.

Seems that worms love the environment under the cardboard and eat the stuff itself, working with other organisms to turn ordinary brown corrugated into extraordinary brown soils.

This method for reclaiming waste land and poor soils is very inexpensive- corrugated cardboard can be gotten for free most anywhere, and can be covered with any organic matter- hay, straw, grass clippings, wood chips- you get the picture. The procedure is simple, just put the cardboard right down on the ground where you want to eliminate weeds and create good soil.  Then cover it with hay or woodchips or other mulch to hold it in place. Wait for a few months for the team of earth dwellers to work their magic, and –voila! - good nutritious dirt.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

It follows that all of Australia can be converted into a carbon sink.

When the edges of the Simpson Desert, Australia, are converted (leaving some as wilderness) to fertile nutritious dirt we have a paradigm for the Sahara Desert, Africa – and all other low fertile land.

People, using poor land, earthworms and cardboard, can immediately commence to sequest carbon from the atmosphere.   They only need title to the waste land and a tiny amount of capital to get started.

The Governments of the World can end global warming any time they want to.
